Groups and placement finals: every team gets an exact place

In a knockout half the teams go home after one loss, and places below third stay shared. If every team should play to the end and get an exact place, use the volleyball layout: groups first, then placement finals.

Групповой этап волейбольного турнира: три группы по четыре команды

How the format works

Stage one is ordinary round-robin groups. Stage two is round-robin mini-tournaments between teams with the same place in their groups: group winners play for 1–3, runners-up for 4–6, third places for 7–9 and so on. There is no knockout bracket: everyone plays the same number of matches.

Placement finals: round robins for places 1–3, 4–6, 7–9 and 10–12
Four placement finals after three groups: the final place is in the last column of each table.

The layout adapts to the field. Nine teams in three groups give three finals of three matches. Ten teams in two groups give five one-on-one cross finals. Sixteen in four groups give four finals of six matches.

Who it suits

  • volleyball events under FIVB regulations;
  • 3×3 basketball and futsal, where every team needs a final place;
  • youth competitions, where nobody should leave after a single match.
Final standings: places of all twelve teams
Result: every team has its own place, nothing shared.

How to start

  1. Create a tournament and choose the “Groups + placement finals” format.
  2. Add teams and set the group size.
  3. Play the group stage.
  4. Placement finals are built automatically from the group results.
